Re: I'm stuck in a 3-way decision for disc of the year......

Three good choices, no doubt about it. On just about any other year, all three of these would be right at the top of my list as well, but 2018 has been an absolute blockbuster for quality. Not going into too much detail, as I really have not figured out how this will settle, but my contenders right ...

Re: The Forgotten Heroes of Prog Metal Thread

I humbly add to this thread Magnitude 9 - Chaos to Control Good call on Mag9! I think they put out three discs total, and all were very solid. Corey Brown seemed to be fairly prolific for awhile, but in recent years has kind of fallen off the map. This band definitely had great chops, and Rob Johns...

Re: Conception back with classic line-up!

I'm a little lukewarm on the "Grand Again" track (I HATE vocal effects, even moreso when singers with such a clean, distinct voice choose to use them), but "Feather" more than makes up for it. I was surprised it was so light, but as you get into it its a perfect Tore/Khan piece t...

Re: Queensryche new album & tour with Fates Warning

Hard to believe they are touring together finally. Don't you guys remember the Fates Warning / Dream Theater / Queensryche tour from back in the early 2000s? Granted, it was square in the middle of the 'Ryche's "ugly" era, but the set list was pretty much similar to the Live Evolution cov...

Re: Can't stop playing this Mötley Crüe song since a couple of days...

Same here..... Crue was a gateway band before getting into heavier bands and eventually prog and power metal. My parents listened to country music while I was growing up, so instead I turned to pop music like Prince and Duran Duran. Later in the 80's that transitioned into hair metal, before discove...

One would think they would sell more records (yeah, I really just said that....) by promoting the fact that Serenity's singer is in it, rather than trying to camouflage it.

It's...... Fine...... Nothing special. Not terrible.

Didn't the song "Inner Enemy" suppose to be on this album? Man, I love that song and I always thought it was an album teaser for the next one.... I hope they just don't scrap it......

Re: Can't stop playing this Mötley Crüe song since a couple of days...

The first Crue album is definitely an awesome disc! They had a certain RAW sound that they never again quite managed to hit..... Vince sounded better on this album than at any other point. If not for the much-maligned John Corabi album (which I freakin' LOVE), the debut would be my favorite.....

Both albums were solid, but "Building Rome" tended to have more of the modern / heavier sound that it seems several of the prog bands of that era were aiming for..... Lots of folks weren't impressed by it, but I thought it was still pretty damn good. "Zeroes and Ones" was reminis...

Re: The Flower Kings: What album should I try first?

This band is symphonic prog in the style of old Yes, musically and particularly in the positive mood and lyrical content, with some of the quirkiness of Frank Zappa and King Crimson. I have a few albums but haven't really spun them in forever. Banks of Eden was my first and it is excellent. The Sum...

I hear more Angel Dust than anything in them..... Minus the keyboards, unfortunately. I liked the new disc, but not as much as the last one. Of course, I wasn't caught up in the PP ecstasy either though......

Solid band, delivering some classic melodic metal. No frills, and none needed.

I had to grin at that. I consider their latest, "A Complex of Cages," an album of the year candidate. It's a great mix of old Opeth and Amorphis. Btw, I'm not sure if you have any tolerance for growls at all, but the vocals are about a 70/30 split throughout the disc in favor of the clean...
