Haven't posted one of these in years--Top 10 2023

While I likely listened to hundreds of albums last year, I ultimately bought 63 albums, all vinyl. I don't buy any other format. I bought 23 fewer albums last year than the year before. I hope to continue that trend! So hear are the ten in order of purchase with some commentary: Klone- Meanwhile Acc...

Re: AVKRVST / The Approbation ....... gem of the year (so far)

I was pretty excited to get this album in. I'd heard a few tracks and had a feeling that the entire album would be solid, and expectations were certainly exceeded. It definitely seems like one that has come in under the radar. Another band that has released an absolutely killer album this year is Go...

Re: How do you listen to music?

*****Excellent set up ..... that Technics turntable is indeed bad ass ..... don't let go of it as you know ...... Back in my old life, I used Emotiva gear and I loved it ....... I'm currently on the fence about pulling the plug on an Emotiva pre-amp, but I'm a bonafide Parasound fan now but ...

Re: How do you listen to music?

Alrighty then. I've been working from home full time for 15 years, so the audio setup has gone through quite a bit of evolution. Most of my at home listening is done over my desk top speakers, which are Emotiva bookshelf speakers, plus a Polk Audio powered sub. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-RZ610. The ...

Re: Random Off Topic - Yngwie Jahoosephattt Malmsteen Appreciation Thread

If Yngwie is a joke now then he was a joke back in the day. The only thing that has changed are the people who are listening. Yngwie is Yngwie. Did he put out better albums 30 years ago? Probably. Is he any less Yngwie now than he was 30 years ago? Absolutely not. Probably the only thing that he has...

Re: Top Favorite Death Metal Albums ... rank them

To a certain extent, the rise in popularity outside of the metal crowd, and also the over-the-top music (and videos), reminds me a lot of Dragonforce when they suddenly exploded onto the scene. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing ;) I went to a few shows that had Dragonforce on the bill and ...

Re: Top Favorite Death Metal Albums ... rank them

I'll have to check it out. What I've heard from the singles wasn't very good (my opinion), but perhaps I just need to spend some time with it. To be honest, Fit for an Autopsy is really the only "deathcore" band I like, but we'll see. Something about how "hipster-popular" they've gotten also holds ...

Yeah, I'm not going to do lists. I'm just going to say that Lorna Shore's "Pain Remains" is the best album I've heard in years, and as far as the death/extreme/Prog mix go, it is a masterpiece.

Keith was the pioneer of the DIY festival. His Powermad Festival was really the seed from which others have grown. The sampler CDs from those shows were legendary. His band Mystic Force absolutely slayed. R.I.P.

Re: Dream Theater - A View from the Top of the World

Here is my review. The new Dream Theater album sounds a lot like Dream Theater, except for those moments when it kind of sounds like a Rush album. If you liked other Dream Theater albums, you will love/hate/not care about this album. Personally, I like it. It has a decrease of annoying keyboard soun...

Anyone have any current info on these singers?

I've been revisiting some older releases and cam across a couple that had really great singers that seem to have fallen off the face of the earth. The first is Thomas Lundin from Hexenhaus. I don't find anything from him after the Dejavoodoo album. The other is Anders Zackrisson from Nocturnal Rites...

I buy vinyl because in the post-apocalyptic world where there is no electricity I will still be able to spin my turntable by hand and hear faint music. If I can source an old hand-crank Victrola that plays 33 1/3, I'll be set!

This is very sad. Robby lived a couple miles away from me. Super nice guy. Crossed paths with him many times in the neighborhood just out and about doing normal life. Kansas was a huge, huge part of the soundtrack of my teenage years (and beyond).

One of the best shows you will ever see is Bielski live. Super funny, and after you see him play you realize how much of Saigon Kick was him. I've seen him a couple of times in a very small "acoustic" setting. Soto was there for one gig, LaTorre for the other. Looking forward to spinning the vinyl s...

slips on heresy boots So I've never really been a Fates fan. A lot of people around here loved the last one, I picked it up, thought it was pretty good, but it didn't blow me away. The positive I will say is that Arjen really has a knack for arranging chorus vocals, especially female vocals. On the not so positive side is that this is the stupidest thingI've heard in a long time. I am so glad I listened to this with earbuds so that the rest of the world wasn't subjected to tha...

Wow, a double blast from the past. Powermad and Voice. Trapped in Anguish was a great album.I don't think the other albums hit me as hard as that one, but definitely a solid band. They put out a new album in 2017.

I go back a long way with this band. How long? I used to pass out flyers with Thom for upcoming gigs. A long, long time ago. To be honest, I think that The Fourth Legacy may have well been the peak for me. I think it was also really the germination point for the "formula". As I recall, I gave the fi...

The Course of Fate album is sitting at the top of my metal top 10 for the year. I think the QR/Everygrey description really misses the mark. To me, this album could have easily been a Fates Warning release between No Exit and APSOG. Can't wait to finally get the vinyl in hand!
