Re: Polyphia - New Levels New Devils

I'm having a Power of Omens moment, in that I'm glad people dig on this (it *is* accomplished, for sure), but I ain't going anywhere near it.

Re: New Seventh Wonder tune

I'm gonna back-burner this for a while, I think. There's so much new stuff out there, I just can't get all that excited for this.

It doesn't help that the bass is buried in the mix - at least on Spotify. Bass is always a big draw for me, and that goes double for SW...

VOLA - Applause of a Distant Crowd

It's out as of today! Sounds good so far. I have no idea how these guys manage to sound this huge, but they do. Also, so far anyway, the riffing isn't djenty like the last disc. https://volaband.bandcamp.com/ EDIT: Okay, the heavy guitars are still there, but used in a slightly different way, maybe?

Don't know how much I'd listen to it, but it does have a nice vibe going on and seems pretty accomplished for a debut.

EDIT: John Mitchell produced it and does a guest spot. Cool.

Re: Shattered Skies - Muted Neon

I think I'm coming around on 8-string guitars as long as they're used in the context of a melodic song and not used for straight-up chunking. You Will Know My Name is a perfect example of where they don't run roughshod over the song.

Re: Kingcrow - The Persistence......

I feel like the dumbest person in the room. I think a long time ago I listened to Phlegethon once and decided the band wasn't for me - I was probably distracted at the time. Along comes the new disc and due to all the raving here, I gave it a spin yesterday. And then I went back to Phlegethon. Then ...

Re: MICHAEL ROMEO - War Of The Worlds Pt. 1

Symphony X was always a band that I loved but only listened to every now and then - they've never been a band to *consume* my listening time over a given period of time. Having said that, this disc is in continual rotation. I don't think there's a note out of place on the whole thing. For this style...

Re: Distorted Harmony - A Way Out (first impressions)

It's funny - when this band goes Djent, they go full-on, but it's not nearly as frequent as initial listens would imply. This is still the band that made Chain Reaction. They melodies are still there, and while maybe not *quite* as accessible as the last album, all the ingredients remain largely unc...

There's a great, long interview with Nick here: https://www.sonicperspectives.com/interviews/interview-with-nick-van-dyk/ I'd think it's pretty much mandatory for any Redemption fan. I guess it stands to reason that Tom came into Redemption not wanting to be 'Evergrey Tom', to the point where he's n...

Re: Distorted Harmony - A Way Out (first impressions)

It's a lot to absorb, and I'm still on my first listen. I'm on record as not being a fan of djent guitars, and I don't know if it's the band or the new guitarist or what, but, yeah, they've moved even more in that direction. I thought the djentyness of the last album was a perfect balance. Maybe I'l...

Re: New Redemption song / video just released 9/10

It's excellent! Tom fits great with the band, even though a bit more "reserved" than with Evergrey. I shared it on my FB! :) I think it's just the nature of the vocal lines. Yeah, I expected him to be blowing the doors off, but he's much more aggressive in Evergrey. Then again, *something...

Re: Neal Morse - Similitude Live in Tilburg 2017 bluray....

I think one of the unsung qualities of Snow is that it's a long prog album that is not made up of very long songs. It thus places less demands on the listener's patience and attention span than do some prog albums with a shorter playing time. The new Similitude Blu-ray does not interest me, but I a...

I'm 6 tunes into the Fates (on Spotify) and it sounds exactly like I'd expect it to - and this is perfectly fine live mix, really good, even - lots of clarity in the instrumentation, which I love. Volume is consistent, too.
