Re: Icefish - Human Hardware

I like 'Paralyzed', the first song they released, but you can only get the disc directly from the band, which, no....

Anyway, it's Virgil Donati and at least part of LaBrie's solo band (Sfogli, for sure on guitars, tho). Heavy prog-metal.

I will say there's probably more 'harsh' vocals than you might care for, and they're of somewhat questionable quality. The clean vocals are very good.

Re: The Vicious Head Society - Abject Tomorrow...

I'm not even through the first song and it's blowing me away. Everyone here can play their asses off. Dream Theater worship only works if you can BRING IT, and these guys totally can. (I'm editing because 'Dream Theater worship' is unfairly reductive - but the musicianship really is waaaaaay up ther...

Playgrounded - In Time with Gravity

Greek band, kind of a dumb name, but this is top-shelf stuff. Drums and bass lay down fat grooves. Guitars are melodic, but sparse. All this is in service to heavy use of electronics. It's a great balance. The singer and the overall tone of the band kind of reminds me of Riverside and Green Carnatio...

Re: Recent listens...

I think the thing about Sons of Apollo is...there's not ENOUGH wanking. I can't believe I'm saying this, but there's a few too many short songs that don't really deliver much beyond huge vocal choruses. I like the disc, but I don't LOVE it...yet. (subject to change) And I know Derek is a Korg guy (o...

Re: Recent listens...

Vuur - I *think* I like it, but there's so much mid-temp stuff on here...I guess I want my heavy music to be fast, too. And as much as I LOVE Anneke's voice, sometimes she can get 'samey' from song-to-song. Sons of Apollo - I wonder how much of this was worked out before hitting the studio as oppose...

Isn't it funny/sad that Communication Lost appears rather heavily in a thread asking for the absolute best and yet they're totally unknown outside of this small genre? BTW, Wolverine is already working on new material.

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

I listened to the whole thing this morning at work (not the ideal situation, I know). *Most* of the bands I dig I need multiple listens under my belt in order to make an accurate assessment. The one band I don't need multiple spins for is Threshold; they simply have their sound and they can throw a ...

Re: Steven Wilson - To The Bone

I don't think it's a pop album by any means. The songs are still very much SW, but he wrote and played on the album with a Telecaster and pretty much no distortion. It's that guitar sound that points to that pop sound, but the songs themselves still have many prog elements . Yeah, just because he d...

Re: Leprous - Malina - album review

I like this disc more than the last few (although I will have to go back and listen to them). Musically, it's quite good. BUT. Einar's vocal delivery just wears me out. Frankly, that's where I miss the Tall Poppy Syndrome Leprous the most - he was quirky and melodic there, but then...the melodrama a...

Re: Steven Wilson - To The Bone

The songs released in advance were hit or miss. "Pariah" was awesome, but "Song of I" was just not my thing. I find that with Steven's post-PT music in general. Looking forward to hearing the whole thing. Even though this is supposed to be a 'pop' album, there are a number of so...

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

That new song is fine, and Glynn sounds good, but Threshold has really become bland lately. It's not just that they're playing the same sound, but the songs themselves are interchangeable. I can't get excited when I can hardly tell one song from the next. I don't disagree. You'd think the band woul...

My wife has largely moved me to digital for music AND books - for as big as my physical music collection is, my library is far larger, and neither works terribly well in a small-ish house. As much as I love physical books, my Kindle is obscenely convenient, and .mp3s from Amazon are of high enough q...

Wow, soooo many good discs mentioned in this thread. There are things mentioned here that I've not listened to for years. I've been so lazy getting my older stuff (the majority of my collection) moved to my phone. I need to fix that asap.

Glynn Morgan has to re-record all vocals, otherwise it would make no sense... Who knew Threshold would ever have something in common with Quiet Riot (or what's left of them) who are facing the very same situation this year!! It's also a great way to kill interest in the album, for both bands....

I've always had the impression that Damian might not be the easiest guy to work with, and he was helping the band out after Mac died. I just can't imagine that stunts like the stripper at PPUSA were all that cool with the rest of the band. I might be wrong - Damian might be a great guy, but I can ve...

This is a solid release, but in no way on the level of Blackwater Park imo. BP has far more interesting, and involved song structures with those long, glorious instrumental passages. This one is much more by the numbers in comparison. I think this largely rests at the feet of the guitarist, who is ...

I don't know that this band is ever going to settle into doing 'their own thing'.
