Re: Rush Concerts

16 or 17, I think? That's just because I'm old - I never road-tripped to see them. I used to live near-ish to Chicago growing up, and they used to play there 2 nights in a row. I'd of course go to both nights, but honestly, by the end of night 2, I was ready to move on - and I consider myself a die-...

Have we talked about the duality of our little community? I know some/a lot of folks here don't appear to be over on the PM group on Facebook. Not sure if it works the other way, but I imagine there are a few folks there that aren't here. I'm not arguing for one format/platform or another, just find...

Long Distance Calling - Boundless

Man, this year is killin' it so far. Some of you may know of this mostly instrumental band. This new disc (just dropped today) has no vocals, but the riffs are HUGE, and there's a lot going on here, and I don't think Spotify is doing it full justice, but it'll have to do for the moment. Post rock, p...

Into The Great Divide - s/t

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?!? This is the project of a software entrepreneur (all non-drum instruments) and one Mr. Mike Mangini (drums, duh). Each song has a brief narrative intro (which I can take or leave), but the tunes themselves are just A+ Dream Theater-ish bliss. Mangini, quite frankly...

Yeah, it's only one song, but...it's good. Much less ethereal, kind of in your face. And at least one of the Seans - Malone - is still in the fold, which automatically makes it awesome.

I played it recently after it came up here. Totally agree with everything Larry said. I BLOWS MY MIND that guys who were 'meh' on the whole thing created this. It's probably a small miracle that it ever saw the light of day.

I can certainly see where if this is your thing, then this is REALLY your thing. Great playing, great recording. Still too busy for my taste. I know that's a bit of an oxymoron for a rabid fan of 'progressive metal', but there you have it. It's the same reason I don't do high-order math as a hobby.

I will say there's probably more 'harsh' vocals than you might care for, and they're of somewhat questionable quality. The clean vocals are very good.

Playgrounded - In Time with Gravity

Greek band, kind of a dumb name, but this is top-shelf stuff. Drums and bass lay down fat grooves. Guitars are melodic, but sparse. All this is in service to heavy use of electronics. It's a great balance. The singer and the overall tone of the band kind of reminds me of Riverside and Green Carnatio...

I think the thing about Sons of Apollo is...there's not ENOUGH wanking. I can't believe I'm saying this, but there's a few too many short songs that don't really deliver much beyond huge vocal choruses. I like the disc, but I don't LOVE it...yet. I don't think it's a pop album by any means. The songs are still very much SW, but he wrote and played on the album with a Telecaster and pretty much no distortion. It's that guitar sound that points to that pop sound, but the songs themselves still have many prog elements . Yeah, just because he d...

I like this disc more than the last few (although I will have to go back and listen to them). Musically, it's quite good. BUT. Einar's vocal delivery just wears me out.
