Yeah, it's only one song, but...it's good. Much less ethereal, kind of in your face. And at least one of the Seans - Malone - is still in the fold, which automatically makes it awesome.

I played it recently after it came up here. Totally agree with everything Larry said. I BLOWS MY MIND that guys who were 'meh' on the whole thing created this. It's probably a small miracle that it ever saw the light of day.

This is officially my favorite disc of 2017. Do not let the fact that I bought very, very little last year fool you; this is a MONSTER.

Also, thanks for the Harvester bitch-slap on this one. :P

Just having the whole band there (past and present) was amazing. I mean, yeah, Ted could have taken all of Nick's parts, but...

Also, think about how little time they probably had to practice for this. I mean, they were TIGHT. Those are all dudes at the top of their game, no question.

I can certainly see where if this is your thing, then this is REALLY your thing. Great playing, great recording. Still too busy for my taste. I know that's a bit of an oxymoron for a rabid fan of 'progressive metal', but there you have it. It's the same reason I don't do high-order math as a hobby.

Random end-of-year thoughts

No, it's not a top 10 or even necessarily related to this year... 1. How *insanely* great is Shadow Gallery? I mean, remember when there was some speculation that they might record at slower speeds and speed it up later? THAT'S how fantastic these guys are ability-wise. 2. I'm really stumped that th...

I like 'Paralyzed', the first song they released, but you can only get the disc directly from the band, which, no....

Anyway, it's Virgil Donati and at least part of LaBrie's solo band (Sfogli, for sure on guitars, tho). Heavy prog-metal.

I will say there's probably more 'harsh' vocals than you might care for, and they're of somewhat questionable quality. The clean vocals are very good.

I'm not even through the first song and it's blowing me away. Everyone here can play their asses off. Dream Theater worship only works if you can BRING IT, and these guys totally can. Playgrounded - In Time with Gravity

Greek band, kind of a dumb name, but this is top-shelf stuff. Drums and bass lay down fat grooves. Guitars are melodic, but sparse. All this is in service to heavy use of electronics. It's a great balance. The singer and the overall tone of the band kind of reminds me of Riverside and Green Carnatio...

I think the thing about Sons of Apollo is...there's not ENOUGH wanking. I can't believe I'm saying this, but there's a few too many short songs that don't really deliver much beyond huge vocal choruses. I like the disc, but I don't LOVE it...yet. (subject to change) And I know Derek is a Korg guy (o...

Vuur - I *think* I like it, but there's so much mid-temp stuff on here...I guess I want my heavy music to be fast, too. And as much as I LOVE Anneke's voice, sometimes she can get 'samey' from song-to-song. Sons of Apollo - I wonder how much of this was worked out before hitting the studio as oppose...

Re: Glynn Morgan returns to THRESHOLD!

I listened to the whole thing this morning at work (not the ideal situation, I know). *Most* of the bands I dig I need multiple listens under my belt in order to make an accurate assessment. The one band I don't need multiple spins for is Threshold; they simply have their sound and they can throw a ...

Re: Steven Wilson - To The Bone

I don't think it's a pop album by any means. The songs are still very much SW, but he wrote and played on the album with a Telecaster and pretty much no distortion. It's that guitar sound that points to that pop sound, but the songs themselves still have many prog elements . Yeah, just because he d...

I like this disc more than the last few (although I will have to go back and listen to them). Musically, it's quite good. BUT. Einar's vocal delivery just wears me out. Frankly, that's where I miss the Tall Poppy Syndrome Leprous the most - he was quirky and melodic there, but then...the melodrama a...

The songs released in advance were hit or miss. "Pariah" was awesome, but "Song of I" was just not my thing. I find that with Steven's post-PT music in general. Looking forward to hearing the whole thing. Even though this is supposed to be a 'pop' album, there are a number of so...

That new song is fine, and Glynn sounds good, but Threshold has really become bland lately. It's not just that they're playing the same sound, but the songs themselves are interchangeable. I can't get excited when I can hardly tell one song from the next. I don't disagree. You'd think the band woul...
